Twitter is 140 characters long and, if your followers are going to pass along your message via a “retweet” you typically don’t want the message to be more than 120 characters long. I personally try to make as many tweets 100 characters or less but I will save that discussion for another day.
The key is finding value/content to tweet that is less than 120 characters. I’ve listed some of the sources I peruse trying to find great content for my followers.
Below are some Great Content to Tweet:
- Quotes that can appeal to your customer base. Each morning I tweet a quote re: business, something inspiring/motivational, etc.
- Tasteful jokes that might show you have some humanity to your business. The key point is that social media is about being transparent than ever. Good businessmen and women know that business is about the business of people.
- Insights into your business or community that adds value to your followers.
I try, as much as possible, to ADD VALUE to my network of followers on Twitter as they provide me with tons of timely, great content/articles, etc. If something is of value I don’t hesitate to retweet a message and pass it along to everyone else. I can’t be an expert at everything and nor should you expect to be one as well. Finding people who regularly post great content/links can save you a ton of time in finding relevant information that will help you stay current about your niche/geographic area.
Resources I use:
- My TwitterStream and Twitter Lists – I absolutely, positively believe this is the #1 resource. If folks you follow or follow you have interesting thoughts/links that would be of value to your followers pass it along via a retweet using the “RT @USERNAME ” before it.
- Guzzle.it <–I customize it for relevant information for your niche or geographic location.
- FavStar.fm <– A good source of content that is being passed around the net in higher numbers.
- search.twitter.com <– I use #quote as a way to look for great quotes throughout the day or using ‘betterbizideas’ to see my mentions throughout the day.
